It's 2:14 AM on I-80 east of Cheyenne. My dash lights up fault code SPN 3361. DEF system. I pull onto the shoulder, kill the engine, and start dialing.
First number: voicemail. Second: "We can be there by sunrise maybe $1,400." Third: ringing, no answer. Fourth: a guy who'll come "in a couple hours" but won't quote a price until he sees the truck.
By call seven I've been on the shoulder 90 minutes. I don't know who's coming, when, or what it'll cost. My load is sitting on a 4 AM delivery window in Omaha.
When the mechanic finally shows, he doesn't have the part. Another 2 hours. The invoice is hand-written on a receipt pad. I'll fight my fleet manager about it for a week.
